Rehabilitation works on the 12-kilometre A4 Road linking Ha Mpiti and the Qacha’s Nek Border Gate are progressing under a M181.8 million project expected to enhance cross-border trade, tourism and job creation.

The nine-month project is being implemented by Qingjian Group Co. Ltd (CNQC), a Chinese-owned company that previously constructed the Makhaola Lerotholi Highway, also known as the Mpiti–Sehlabathebe road. The construction phase will be followed by a 12-month defects liability period.

Roads Directorate Manager for Corporate Communications, Ms Nozesolo Mpopo, said the project is set to stimulate the local economy through improved mobility and employment opportunities for communities around Melele.

“Upon completion, this key corridor will improve cross-border trade between Lesotho and South Africa, boost tourism and facilitate the transportation of wool and mohair products,” she said.

She added that the rehabilitated road section is designed to minimise travel disruptions and reduce high vehicle maintenance costs.

Ms Mpopo further noted that the project will improve access to essential services such as schools, clinics and government offices.

She said the scope of work includes full reconstruction of failed road sections as well as asphalt overlays on structurally sound sections.

To address climate-related challenges in the area, the contractor will upgrade drainage systems, replace damaged culverts and install new ones designed to withstand heavy storms, while also reducing erosion and landslides. Road signs and markings will also be installed.

“The project forms part of the Roads Directorate’s broader strategy for asset recovery aimed at ensuring the sustainable performance and longevity of Lesotho’s national road network,” she said.
