LESOTHO LAUNCHED NATIONAL DIGITIZATION FRAMEWORK TO PRESERVE HERITAGE.
On behalf of the Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Hon. Motlatsi Maqelepo officiated the launch of the National Digitization Framework, describing it as a landmark initiative that reflects Lesotho’s commitment to digital transformation and the preservation of its national heritage.
Hon. Maqelepo noted that the framework forms part of the commemoration of 200 years since the formation of the Basotho nation, underscoring its importance in safeguarding the country’s documentary heritage for present and future generations. He highlighted that the initiative would ensure that Basotho history, culture and knowledge systems are systematically preserved and made accessible through digital platforms.
The Minister emphasized that through the framework, Lesotho is advancing towards a more coherent and coordinated approach to digitization. He described it as a strategic investment in the country’s future within the global digital environment, aimed at strengthening information management systems and improving access to knowledge.
He further highlighted that the framework would enhance the preservation of archives, improve accessibility of information, and build institutional capacity for managing digital resources across relevant sectors.
Hon. Maqelepo also expressed appreciation to the British High Commission in Maseru for its continued support, noting the strong partnership between Lesotho and the United Kingdom in advancing digital development initiatives. He further commended the collaboration between the British Library and institutions in Lesotho, which has contributed significantly to the country’s ongoing efforts in digitization and heritage preservation.
The National Digitization Framework is expected to serve as a guiding instrument for coordinated digitization efforts across the country, positioning Lesotho to fully participate in the evolving digital era while safeguarding its national identity and historical record.
