Security officers in Nanyuki Town, Laikipia East Sub-county have destroyed more than 2,000 litres of illicit brews impounded in the last four months and which were part of court exhibits for concluded cases.

The destroyed liquor also included 12 crates of legalized but expired beer confiscated by police officers from bars where they were being offered on sale despite posing health risks to unsuspecting consumers.

Following the discovery, Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli has now cautioned revellers be keen while purchasing alcoholic beverages saying unscrupulous traders were stocking and selling the drinks instead of destroying them.

“There are expired products and they are still being sold out. I am calling those in alcohol business especially the permitted brands to sell to their revellers only alcoholics beverages that are not expired,” he cautioned.

Muli announced that security officers would soon launch a major crackdown on illicit brew dealers who had now shifted their operational bases to villages in neighbouring counties of Nyeri and Meru where they continued to brew the liquor for supply within Nanyuki Town estates.

“Level of illicit drugs have declined; majority of brewers have escaped to neighbouring sub-counties. As security committee we have vowed to move in those areas and mop up those Illicit brew dealers,” said Muli.

The security team commended the judiciary for playing a crucial role in the fight against illicit brews dealers by imposing maximum penalties on offenders and ensuring cases are concluded fast as a deterred measure to reduce the vice.
