LESOTHO COMPLETED 2026 HOUSING AND POPULATION CENSUS ENUMERATION SUCCESSFULLY.

The 2026 Lesotho Housing and Population Census enumeration concluded yielding satisfactory overall numbers.

The Bureau of Statistics will begin data analysis soon with official results to be announced and published once the comprehensive review had been finalized and approved.

Bureau of Statistics Director, Mrs. ‘Malehloa Molato, expressed her deep gratitude for the dedication shown by enumerators and supervisors, despite the various logistical challenges encountered during the nationwide counting process.

While the overall participation figures are highly satisfactory, Mrs. Molato noted that census teams are conducting essential mop-up operations in specific areas, including Maseru and cattle pounds.

Meanwhile the 2026 Lesotho Population and Housing Census employed over 8,000 temporary field staff across the country.

The Census was crucial for updating data on population size, distribution and living conditions, which directly informs government decisions on healthcare, education and infrastructure among others.

This exercise which is conducted every 10 years, was being spearheaded by the Bureau of Statistics under the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, with significant technical and financial support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The 2026 Housing and Population Census is the seventh undertaken by Lesotho since 1966.
