A stray elephant kills nine-month-old child in Kiboko
A marauding elephant trampled a nine-month-old child, killing her, while two others are admitted to the hospital in Makindu subcounty.
The Monday 7 a.m. incident occurred when a woman identified as Faith Musenya (29) was attacked by a stray elephant at the Kiboko area while in the company of her two children as she went to work in the farm.
The woman and her son were rushed to Makindu Subcounty Hospital to be treated for injuries they sustained during the morning attack; however, the boy escaped unhurt.
A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Senior Warden, Lenguro Pamu, confirmed the incident to Kenya News Agency on Monday, saying the woman sustained a fracture on the leg.
“The stray elephant trampled Mutanu Musenya, a 9 months-old, in the Kiboko area when the mother was going to work at Onesmus Munyao’s farm. Unfortunately, Faith, through the incident, lost her nine months -old child,” said Lenguro.
The body of the minor was taken to Makindu Subcounty Hospital for preservation, awaiting autopsy.
The attack comes at a time when the Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse has called on KWS to take quick measures to confine the animals in the Tsavo National Park to avoid such loss of lives and destruction of property.
