Machakos Assembly passes half of Sh17.7 billion budget amid finance row

The Machakos County Assembly has approved Sh8.9 billion, about 50% of the county’s Sh17.7 billion budget, to cover essential services and salaries as a standoff between the Executive and the Assembly continues.

The partial approval was necessitated by delays linked to a dispute over the Finance docket. County Assembly members impeached CECM for Finance Catherine Mutanu, who was later reinstated by a court ruling. The wrangle has stalled full budget approval and slowed county projects.

Moving the motion, MCA Francis Ngunga said the delay had affected service delivery and development. He urged both arms of government to resolve their differences and fast-track the process.

“Budgets are not done on the street,” Ngunga said, adding that allocations must translate into visible projects for residents.

With half the budget now cleared, focus shifts to implementation as the Assembly and Executive seek consensus to release the remaining funds.
