LESOTHO GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED M547 MILLION REHABILITATION OF A2 ROAD, TRANSPORT ROUTE ESTABLISHING CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN MASERU AND MAFETENG
The Government of Lesotho officially launched the rehabilitation of a 64 kilometre section of the A2, Airport Junction to Mafeteng Road, a major transport route connecting Maseru and Mafeteng, in a move aimed at improving road safety, facilitating trade and strengthening economic activity.
The launch ceremony was held in Mafeteng where the Ministry of Public Works and Transport introduced Sinohydro Corporation Limited as the contractor to undertake the rehabilitation works.
The project represents a government investment of M547,383,184.79 and is expected to be completed within three years. Mafube Consulting (Pty) Ltd has been appointed to supervise the works and ensure compliance with the approved road designs and construction standards.
The rehabilitation will involve upgrading the road through concrete surfacing, installing new drainage pipes and constructing water management systems to address areas frequently affected by flash floods and water accumulation during heavy rainfall. These interventions are intended to improve the road’s durability and ensure that it remains accessible under different weather conditions.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Public Works and Transport , Hon. Matjato Moteane, highlighted that the A2 Road had suffered years of neglect and deterioration, with its condition making it increasingly difficult and unsafe for motorists. He noted that previous maintenance interventions, which largely involved filling potholes and clearing roadside drainage channels, were no longer adequate to address the road’s condition, making comprehensive rehabilitation necessary.
The Minister explained that the A2 is an important economic route linking five districts in the south of the country. It supports the movement of people and goods and facilitates trade between districts. The road is also used daily by workers commuting to and from their workplaces.
The rehabilitation is expected to bring significant benefits to road users and surrounding communities. Improved road conditions will facilitate safer and more reliable transportation, enable health services to reach communities more efficiently and strengthen commercial activities between districts. The Ministry also anticipates a reduction in dust and road accidents associated with the road’s deteriorating condition.
The Minister urged Sinohydro Corporation Limited to execute the project with integrity and professionalism, adhere to the approved designs and contractual obligations, use quality construction materials and prioritize the safety of both workers and the public. He further emphasized the importance of completing the works within the agreed timeframe to ensure that the investment delivers lasting value.
He also called on motorists to exercise caution and drive responsibly, cautioning that improved road infrastructure must be accompanied by responsible road use.
The A2 rehabilitation forms part of the Government’s broader responsibility to develop and maintain road infrastructure that supports national economic growth and improves the livelihoods of Basotho.
The Government maintains that investing in durable road infrastructure is essential to improving connectivity, strengthening access to essential services and creating an enabling environment for trade and economic development.
Thanks Hon.🙏
