ITU AIMS TO BOOST DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION, ICT REGULATION

Lesotho is moving forward with plans to improve digital services and strengthen ICT use across key sectors.

The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Kanono Ramashamole, has highlighted the significance of Ms Halima Letamo’s visit from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), calling it a vital step towards advancing Lesotho’s digital development.

Ms Letamo, who heads the ITU Area Office for Southern Africa, met with key stakeholders including the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

According to Mr Ramashamole, the visit focused on exploring how technology can be better used in agriculture and ICT governance.

One of the key outcomes discussed in agriculture was the integration of digital tools such as artificial intelligence and chatbots. Mr. Ramashamole explained, “Farmers will be able to type the challenges they face, and receive instant responses from digital platforms.” He added that a formal plan will be developed and implemented in 2026, based on feedback from Ms. Letamo.

In her remarks, Ms. Letamo expressed gratitude for the warm reception and explained ITU’s mission to improve ICT and telecommunications.

She emphasised that ICT is a pillar of the economy and must be backed by strong regulations. “Food is life,” she stated, underlining the importance of using technology to strengthen food security in Lesotho.

Mr. Ramashamole concluded that building strong digital foundations referred to as “digital strings” which will help Basotho the access and use technology more effectively.
