Lesotho’s Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane, attended the International High-Level Panel on Water Investments for Africa and Global Cooperation, held on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The panel was chaired by Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, and brought together senior African leaders and international partners, including H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; H.E. Cheikh Niang, Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs of Senegal, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye; and H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania and Chair of the Global High-Level Panel on Water Investments for Africa.

Discussions underscored that Africa’s water challenge is fundamentally one of underinvestment and implementation, highlighting the need to translate identified water projects into bankable, investment-ready initiatives.

The panel stressed the importance of effective de-risking and blended-finance mechanisms to mobilise investment and accelerate implementation.

Participants reaffirmed the imperative of moving beyond commitments and project identification towards tangible, bankable and implementable investments, while strengthening international partnerships ahead of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, to be held in Abu Dhabi.

For Lesotho, a country whose development is closely linked to its water resources, continued international cooperation and investment in water infrastructure remain critical to unlocking the full economic and developmental potential of the country’s water sector.
