Translate research into solutions, PM Nabbanja urges scientists

The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has asked health experts to translate their research into solutions to African challenges.

“We must ensure that the knowledge produced in our universities is translated into national policies, integrated into our health facilities, and felt in the daily lives of our people,” the Premier said.

Opening the 9th AFREhealth annual conference at Speke Resort and Conference Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala, on Tuesday, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja  observed that, for too long, Africa has been described as a place of health burdens rather than health solutions.

“I am glad that this conference focuses on African researchers, African universities, and African institutions generating the evidence and innovations that our continent needs,” the Prime Minister said. “Uganda is proud to be part of this story. I urge you to continue generating knowledge that speaks directly to our realities.”

She assured researchers and innovators of the continued Government support to address challenges that affect the people.

“The Government remains committed to creating an environment that nurtures research and innovation, whether through policy, strategic investment, or the ongoing strengthening of our tertiary institutions,” PM Nabbanja said.

Professor Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, which hosted the conference, appealed to the Government to increase funding for research and innovation.

“We thank the Government for providing Shs 1 billion annually for research and innovation, but this needs to be increased to at least Shs 15 billion,” Kibwika said.

Nelson Sewankambo, a professor of medicine in the College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, Makerere University, called on the Government to support their efforts to turn AFREhealth into a continental body.

The ongoing conference is being attended by researchers, educators, policymakers, and health professionals from across Africa.

During the opening session, health professionals from across Africa recommended to the Government that Ssewankambo be recognized for his tremendous contribution to the continent through his innovative research work that has transformed the medical profession.
