The Minister of State for Luwero-Rwenzori and Busoga, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, has urged newly elected local leaders in Luwero District to rise above political differences and focus on fighting poverty and addressing challenges affecting their communities.

Kaboyo made the call recently while launching orientation meetings for newly elected local leaders in Katikamu Sub-county, where leaders discussed pressing community challenges and ways of working together to address them.

“Our people need their leaders to solve problems. Do not hate or hurt each other because you come from different political parties. Let us fight poverty and not each other,” Kaboyo said.

She urged the leaders to recognise that political differences should not stand in the way of cooperation, saying they can disagree politically while still working together to improve the lives of residents.

“We can disagree politically and sit at the same table to plan and make the lives of our people better,” she said, adding that leadership requires courage and commitment.

Improving service delivery

Her remarks followed concerns from local leaders regarding service delivery in health and education, among others. The Katikamu Sub-county LCIII Chairperson, Richard Kirabira, said addressing service delivery challenges would contribute to improving living conditions and supporting development in the area.

Hon. Kaboyo called for stronger collaboration between citizens, local leaders and government to improve service delivery. She also urged the leaders to mobilise the people to participate in government programmes aimed at improving household incomes and expanding economic opportunities.

The Luwero Resident District Commissioner, Mariam Nalubega, urged the newly elected leaders to serve all residents, regardless of their political affiliations.

She challenged them to demonstrate equity, integrity and commitment in carrying out their responsibilities, adding that leadership comes with an obligation to serve everyone in a community.

Nalubega also urged local leaders to take an active role in identifying and reporting security concerns, describing them as an important link in maintaining security at the grassroots.
