President Hichilema Leads Nation in 62nd Independence Commemoration
President Hakainde Hichilema today joined Zambians in commemorating the country’s 62nd Independence anniversary, hosting guests from across society at State House under the theme “Zambia @62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future.”
In his independence message broadcast on the eve of the celebrations, President Hichilema called for faster economic growth through increased production, expanded exports and better use of Zambia’s vast potential. He said the Government’s Grow Zambia Agenda aims to move the country from stabilisation to sustained growth, anchored on higher output of maize, wheat and copper, expanded electricity generation, and stronger tourism.
The President stressed that growth must go hand in hand with protecting vulnerable citizens and strengthening national institutions. He said the anniversary theme provides an opportunity to reflect on Zambia’s achievements while charting a path for the future.

Today’s commemorations began with a wreath‑laying ceremony at the Freedom Statue in honour of men and women who died in the struggle for independence. This was followed by an investiture ceremony at State House where President Hichilema honoured distinguished citizens for outstanding service and bravery.
Among those recognised was Robert Chitambo, awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry for helping rescue 13 young women abducted in Lusaka District. In a citation read on the President’s behalf by Special Assistant for Legal Affairs Christopher Mundia, Mr. Chitambo was commended for placing the safety of others above his own.

Also honoured was Newton Nalumino, a fisherman from Namwala District, who rescued a colleague from a crocodile attack. “Having regard to your services, I do by this warrant award you the President’s Medal for Gallantry,” read the citation.

Industrial leaders were also recognised. Iqbal Patel, proprietor of The Trade Kings Group of Companies, was commended for his contribution to Zambia’s industrialisation, having grown the company into a leading manufacturer with over 100 brands and investments exceeding US$1 billion. Yaochi Huang, proprietor of Wonderful Group of Companies, was honoured for pioneering leadership in industrialisation, import substitution, employment creation and agricultural development.
President Hichilema has further marked the occasion by pardoning 852 inmates, including 838 ordinary prisoners, four women with circumstantial children, eight elderly inmates and two foreign nationals. He also commuted sentences for 146 inmates to various terminable terms.
