Calm prevails in Kitengela as security heightened ahead of demonstrations

A calm and peaceful atmosphere was witnessed in Kitengela town on Thursday morning, though most businesses remaining closed as a contingent of police officers maintained security in the area.

Sections of the busy Namanga Highway passing through Kitengela were largely deserted, with significantly fewer vehicles and reduced business activity compared to a typical weekday.

Police officers were seen patrolling various parts of the town as authorities maintained a heightened security presence to monitor the situation and ensure public safety

Human rights activist Bob Njagi, a resident of Kitengela, was reportedly arrested on Wednesday and is being held at an undisclosed police station due to security concerns.

Last week, business owners and traders urged residents to shun violence and maintain peace during the planned demonstrations, citing concerns over security and the need to protect livelihoods and property.

The developments came amid scheduled Gen Z-led protests today June 25, 2026, with Kitengela among the areas that have previously experienced notable protest activity.

Security measures were also heightened beyond Kitengela, with several major highways and roads leading into Nairobi reported to have police roadblocks and security checks as authorities monitored the situation.
