The United States (US) Africa Command’s Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Engagement, Ambassador Robert Scott, had reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between the United States and Lesotho despite recent trade tariffs imposed by the US that resulted in hundreds of Basotho losing their jobs.

Speaking during a press conference in Maseru, Ambassador Scott emphasized that, despite existing challenges, Lesotho and the US remain close partners and have enjoyed a strong relationship for many years. He noted that his visit to Lesotho reflects the continued partnership between the two countries, as well as with neighbouring South Africa and Eswatini.

Scott stated that both governments continue to work together on various initiatives aimed at promoting development.

He cited discussions with the Ministry of Justice on border security, including the potential use of drone technology to enhance border surveillance and monitoring.

He explained that countries face a range of potential threats and that it is important to anticipate and prepare for them in order to remain proactive.

Among the areas discussed were the establishment of a command centre to improve disaster response and emergency coordination. He stressed the importance of involving the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) in such initiatives and highlighted the need for continued collaboration.

Scott also remarked that the LDF is regarded as one of the region’s most capable military forces, although it still requires support in certain areas.

He noted that the United States values partnerships with countries that contribute to regional security, pointing to the LDF’s participation in the peacekeeping mission in Mozambique as an example.

In addition, he highlighted opportunities for the two countries to strengthen cooperation in development, agriculture, investment, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

Accompanying Ambassador Scott was Captain Michele Lowe of the US Navy, who expressed pride in working alongside the LDF. She spoke about efforts to support programmes that assist soldiers returning from peacekeeping missions in reintegrating with their families and communities.

US Chargé d’Affaires Tom Hines noted that years of cooperation between Lesotho and the United States have contributed to improvements in life expectancy in Lesotho, particularly through HIV/AIDS programmes.

Hines also pointed out that US companies continue to invest in Lesotho for the mutual benefit of both countries. He explained that US Africa Command works closely with African partners to counter transnational threats, strengthen security institutions, and respond to crises in order to promote security, stability, and prosperity.

According to Hines, the visit aims to further strengthen the close and productive relationship between the two nations and deepen security cooperation with the LDF. He emphasized that the partnership is founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and a common commitment to advancing peace, security, and economic opportunity for citizens.

“Through training exchanges, professional military education, and cooperation on regional security priorities, our partnership continues to grow stronger and more effective. Beyond security cooperation, the United States remains committed to supporting Lesotho’s development goals,” he said.

Hines further acknowledged the importance of sustained investments in health, education, economic growth, and opportunities for young people, noting that these contribute significantly to lasting stability.

Ambassador Scott has served in his current position since 2023 and previously served as the United States Ambassador to Malawi.
