Fire razes down a dormitory at Masosa Mixed secondary school in Nyamira
An afternoon inferno yesterday razed down a girl’s dormitory of Masosa Mixed Secondary School in West Mugirango constituency, Nyamira County.
The school Principal, James Mogusu, confirmed to press that the Wednesday afternoon fire incident started when the students were in their after-lunch classes.
“We were already on with our afternoon school program then at around 1500 hrs we saw thick black smoke emanating from the girls’ dormitory. We rushed to quench the fire that spread so fast across the dormitory block. We called the county disaster team who also responded swiftly including the community members and other well-wishers who all assisted us to put out the fire.” The principal confirmed.
Mr. Mogusu confirmed that no student was hurt in the afternoon inferno incident which destroyed bedding, student boxes and the dormitory building’s entire roof housing 104 girls.
“I want to sincerely appreciate our MP for West Mugirango Stephen Mogaka who acted swiftly when we reported to his office about this unfortunate incident. He has sent his office team which has brought new bedding for all the 104 girls and they will not go home but continue with their studies until the right time to break for half-term.
Mr. Lucas Charana, West Mugirango Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairman confirmed that the MP directed them to ensure the affected students are supported so that they don’t go home and miss out of the school schedule since there were no injuries.
We have brought 104 mattresses, 104 blankets and a pair of 104 bedsheets to support the affected girls so they continue with their studies.
Mr. Mogusu told the press that the cause of the fire has not yet been established, but investigations on the cause and extent of damage will commence because all the relevant officers are already dealing with the matter.
