Kihuririo Comprehensive School benefits from new laboratory

Learners at Kihuririo Comprehensive School in Githunguri, Kiambu County, are set to benefit from a newly built and equipped laboratory funded through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

The laboratory was commissioned by Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba, who said the facility would support Junior Secondary School learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by providing a suitable environment for practical learning.

Wamuchomba said the laboratory was among several education projects being implemented in the constituency to improve learning facilities and create a better environment for learners.

The legislator has also overseen the renovation of classrooms and improvement of other facilities in schools across Githunguri Constituency.

Earlier this week, she commissioned renovated classrooms and cabro paving works at Gathaithi Primary School. The project, funded through the NG-CDF, involved tiling classrooms, repainting walls and blackboards, and paving the school compound from the main gate.

Wamuchomba said the renovations had transformed the learning environment at the school, which previously had old classrooms and a leaking roof.

She said some of the classrooms had been constructed in the 1960s and required urgent renovation to provide learners with safer and more conducive facilities.

“We came here when the roof was leaking. The classes were very old, done back in 1963 or thereabout. Now we have done renovations. We have installed tiles, repainted the walls and blackboards, and the school is now an up-market school,” she said.

At Githunguri Technical Secondary School, Wamuchomba also commissioned a modern ablution block equipped with seven toilets, a changing room, a washing area and an Aqua System.

She said the project was initiated after the NG-CDF committee raised concerns about the poor condition of the school’s previous washrooms.

“The NG-CDF committee came to me and reported how bad the washrooms in this school were and proposed we do a new washroom block,” she said.

Wamuchomba noted that the new facility includes separate facilities for girls and a dedicated changing area, providing learners with essential sanitation and hygiene services.

She explained that commissioning completed NG-CDF projects was a legal requirement that formally transferred projects from contractors to their intended beneficiaries.

“By law, whenever we complete a CDF project, we are supposed to commission it. Commissioning means the project has been handed over from the contractors to the beneficiaries,” she said.

The MP pledged to spearhead further improvements at Githunguri Technical Secondary School, including the renovation of the administration block and dilapidated classrooms.

She also promised to facilitate the installation of cabro paving within the school compound, construction of a perimeter wall and replacement of some old roofs.

Wamuchomba urged learners to remain focused on their education and not allow difficult circumstances to limit their ambitions, saying determination and hard work could enable them to achieve their goals.

The improvements come as schools prepare learners for national examinations and seek to enhance facilities ahead of the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination period.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the KCSE rehearsal is scheduled for October 16, while oral and practical examinations will begin on October 19.
