LESOTHO CITIZENS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DON NATIONAL COLOURS.
The National Assembly had designated Thursdays as a day for Basotho to wear national colours in an effort to promote patriotism, unity and national pride.
This follows the adoption of a motion by the house urging Members of Parliament, civil servants and citizens to wear the national colours of blue, white and green.
The motion also seeks to strengthen national identity, social cohesion and patriotism among Basotho.
Moving the motion, Matala Member of Parliament Dr. Ts’eliso Moroke said wearing national colours would help create a sense of unity, identity and belonging among citizens.
Dr. Moroke said the initiative would also demonstrate love for the country and respect for its values and history.
Although supporting the motion, Member of Parliament Mr. Hlalele Lets’aba said clear guidelines should be developed on how Members of Parliament should wear the national colours, as Parliament is governed by standing orders.
Mr. Lets’aba also noted that wearing national colours in Parliament could inspire students who often visit the National Assembly on Thursdays.
Meanwhile, the house is debating another motion urging government to urgently impose a moratorium on housing settlements developing on agricultural land.
The motion further calls on government to introduce a digital land delimitation process that would produce legally binding land use plans across the country.
