The Sate of Eritrea and the Republic of The Gambia establish diplomatic relations

Asmara, 24 October 2026 – The State of Eritrea and the Republic of The Gambia established diplomatic relations through a Joint Communiqué signed in New York yesterday, 23 October.

The Joint Communiqué was signed by Ms. Sophia Tesfamariam, Permanent Representative of the State of Eritrea to the United Nations, and Mr. Lamin B. Dibba, Permanent Representative of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Nations.

The establishment of diplomatic relations marks an important step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries. It provides a foundation for deepening dialogue and mutual understanding while creating opportunities to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including political affairs, trade, economic development, culture, and other sectors.

These relations are grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations.
