Asmara, 06 June 2026- World Environment Day was commemorated at the Barka Secondary School Conference Hall in Asmara today under the theme: “Inspired by Nature; For Climate, For Our Future!”. The event was attended by Government and PFDJ officials, as well as representatives of UN offices in Eritrea and invited guests.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, called on youth and students to fully understand the consequences of climate change, work earnestly to mitigate its impact, and become advocates for ensuring environmental safety.

Noting that the climate change prevailing worldwide is mainly the result of human activity, Minister Tesfai called for a reinforced role and contribution of society, especially the youth.

Ms. Nashida Sattar, representing the United Nations Development Programme, and Mr. Seium Teame, representing the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, said that Eritrea has shown strong commitment through afforestation, soil and water conservation, and community-based natural resources management, demonstrating how nature-based solutions can restore ecosystems, support livelihoods, and build resilience.

At the event, research papers were presented focusing on the progress and contribution of students’ summer work, as well as climate change consequences and the imperative for collective action. A video presentation on waste management was also featured.

The event also featured cultural performances reflecting the theme of the day, as well as the presentation of awards to winners of the general knowledge competitions held among high school students.

World Environment Day has been observed at the international level since 1973, following the resolution of the UN General Assembly in 1972.
