CHINA 100% TARIFF-FREE WILL BENEFIT LESOTHO IN AGRO-PROCESSING, LIGHT MANUFACTURING AND EXPORT READINESS.

The Kingdom of Lesotho was represented by Honorable Minister of Finance and Development Planning Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, at the Third Global Conference on Action-Oriented: Building a Global Community of Development for All, held in China. Dr. Matlanyane echoed the spirit of shared development and collective progress and reaffirmed that climate change, constrained financing, and widening inequalities demand unity, cooperation, and action.

Hon. Minister spoke to the lived realities of developing countries and set clear priorities: climate resilience, digital transformation, and fair, sustainable financing that delivers for our people. She emphasized that partnerships, especially with China, continue to bring real results and must be strengthened.

Her Excellency Ms. Mapaballo Lydia Mile, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the People’s Republic of China, attended the Annual Retreat of the Group of African Ambassadors in China held in Beijing under the theme: “Leveraging China’s 100% Tariff-Free Offer to Foster Development and Prosperity in Africa.”

Discussions emphasized that while the zero-tariff offer presents a major opportunity, its benefits depend on strategic action. For Lesotho, this means advancing value addition, agro-processing, light manufacturing, strengthening standards compliance, production capacity, and export readiness. The retreat further highlighted the importance of leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), improving logistics and trade finance, and building competitive value chains. For Lesotho this means translating market access into sustainable industrial growth and job creation.

 The Honourable Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, together with H.E. Ambassador ’Mapaballo ’Mile, held a courtesy meeting with the Chairman of TBEA, a leading provider of renewable energy solutions in China Mr. Zhang Xin, TBEA is  currently implementing a photovoltaic project at Ha Ramarothole, in Mafeteng District whereby Phase I had successfully been completed with Phase II set to commence soon.

The delegation was further hosted at the TBEA Science and technology museum, where they gained insights into the company’s evolution and achievements. This was followed by a visit to one of TBEA’s industrial parks, showcasing advanced technologies across the power supply value chain.
