GOVERNMENT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT FUND POLICY
The proposed policy will provide a framework for the establishment of a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund that focuses on compensation for bodily injuries and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents.
It is also intended to reform the current compensation framework established under the Motor Vehicle Insurance Order No. 26 of 1989.
According to the Ministry, the new policy seeks to strengthen governance, improve the sustainability of funding, ensure fair and timely compensation for road accident victims, and promote road safety initiatives in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. It will also align Lesotho’s motor vehicle accident compensation system with national development priorities and regional best practices.
As part of the policy development process, the Ministry is inviting members of the public and all interested stakeholders to submit written comments and recommendations.
Those encouraged to participate include government institutions, civil society organisations, transport industry representatives, legal practitioners, healthcare professionals, road safety advocates, development partners, academic institutions, persons with disabilities, and victims of road accidents.
The Ministry says public participation is essential in developing a policy that responds to the needs of Basotho and contributes to a more effective, equitable and sustainable road accident compensation system.
