Kaboyo rallies Ugandans to sort waste

The Minister of State for Luwero-Rwenzori Affairs, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, has called on Ugandans to make cleanliness a daily responsibility.  She also urged households, businesses and communities to improve waste management and participate consistently in the National Cleaning Day programme, which is aimed at keeping Uganda clean.

Hon. Kaboyo made the call while participating in National Cleaning Day activities at Kasana Market in Luwero Town Council, Luwero District, on 29 August 2026. In July,the Government declared the last Saturday of every month National Cleaning Day. “I urge you to separate waste at the source because this supports the recycling industry. Proper waste management should begin in homes and extend to businesses, markets, streets and other public spaces,” the Minister said.  She added that “Cleaning goes beyond removing dirt from under the bed, cleaning every room in your home, or washing your plates and clothes. It means keeping yourself, your home, your neighbourhood and the entire community clean.”

Hon. Kaboyo encouraged parents to involve children in cleaning activities to help them develop a culture of hygiene and responsibility from an early age.  She noted that while some children played football on the roads, their parents and other community members participated in the cleaning activities.  “The monthly exercise should complement, rather than replace, everyday efforts to maintain clean environments,” Hon. Kaboyo said.

The Minister discouraged the public from burning polythene and plastics, saying the practice is harmful to both people and the environment.

During the exercise, she donated 10 wheelbarrows, 15 spades, 15 hoes, gloves, masks and 100 brooms to support cleaning activities in the area. Hon. Kaboyo commended the leaders who participated in the exercise and urged them to continue educating the public about the benefits of keeping the environment clean.

The Minister also urged residents to conserve the environment alongside keeping it clean, while taking advantage of opportunities created by the growing number of gfactories in Luwero.
