Nurses from across Lesotho gathered in Maseru to commemorate International Nurses Day, celebrating their dedication and contribution to strengthening the country’s healthcare system under the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

Speaking during the commemoration, President of the Lesotho Nursing and Midwifery Organisation (LeNMO), Mr. Busa Qhala, urged nurses to reflect on the quality of care they provide to Basotho and uphold professionalism within the healthcare sector.

Mr. Qhala said empowered nurses play a critical role in saving lives and giving hope to patients during difficult moments. He encouraged nurses to ask themselves whether they would be satisfied receiving the same treatment they provide to patients, while also reminding them to take care of their emotional and mental wellbeing.

He further called for unity among nurses, saying solidarity and cooperation are essential in overcoming challenges facing the health sector. Mr. Qhala noted that LeNMO will continue advocating for the protection and strengthening of the nursing profession.

Chairman of the Student Chapter of LeNMO, Mr. Loti Matsoso, said International Nurses Day is not only a celebration of nurses but also a reminder of the extraordinary role they play in society.

He paid tribute to former LeNMO President Mr. Tanti Ranthimo and former General Secretary Mr. Santi Morephe for their immense contribution to shaping the nursing profession, saying their dedication, mentorship, and leadership continue to inspire many nurses today.

Mr. Matsoso said although the two leaders are no longer physically present, their contributions remain deeply rooted within the profession. He urged nurses to honour their legacy through integrity, compassion, professionalism, and commitment to humanity…
