The Government has offered 50,000 coffee seedlings worth Shs 100 million to Kamira Commercial Farmers Cooperative Society in Luwero District to boost coffee production. Each seedling is valued at Shs 2,000.

The Minister of State for Luwero-Rwenzori and Busoga Affairs, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, recently handed over the seedlings, provided through the Operation Wealth Creation programme, to the cooperative’s leaders.

The cooperative chairperson, Bonifance Lumu, thanked the Government for the seedlings and called for more interventions in coffee value addition.

“These 50,000 seedlings are more than planting materials,” he said. “They represent 50,000 opportunities to expand production, improve household incomes and build a stronger commercial farming community. We have enough land for value addition projects, such as processing factories.”

The Minister urged cooperative members to use the seedlings to increase coffee production and household incomes. She encouraged all farmers in the district to join organised groups and work together to fight poverty.

“We need to join efforts to eradicate poverty in this region,” Hon. Kaboyo said. “I encourage you all to grow your savings organisations and farmer cooperatives so that you can build stronger financial capacity.”

She said the provision of the seedlings was part of efforts to restore Luwero’s glory as one of Uganda’s biggest coffee-producing areas.

“These seedlings are not just planting materials; they are an investment in higher household incomes, wealth creation and the fight against poverty,” the Minister added.

Hon. Kaboyo encouraged residents to take advantage of other Government programmes, such as the Parish Development Model, to create wealth.

Responding to concerns over reports of public land grabbing in the area, the Resident District Commissioner, Mariam Nalubega Seguya, said the Government will continue to protect public land for the benefit of Ugandans.
