NAMUTUMBA & KALIRO

The Minister of State for Luwero-Rwenzori Affairs in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Alice K. Kaboyo, has commissioned newly constructed and furnished classroom blocks in Namutumba and Kaliro Districts in Busoga sub-region.

The new classroom blocks at Nawansagwa Primary School (Namutumba) and Kiwa-Nawabuzi Primary School (Kaliro) are expected to improve learning conditions at both institutions, which have over 1,800 pupils.

The facilities, which include water storage tanks, incinerators and latrines, were built by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) – a business arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces – with funding from the Ministry of Luwero-Rwenzori Affairs.

Hon. Kaboyo acknowledged the shortage of education infrastructure in Busoga but said the Government was addressing it.

She added that the construction of additional classrooms at the two schools was part of efforts to improve the learning environment, urging parents to provide their children with basic necessities such as food, drinking water and school uniforms.

“A hungry child cannot concentrate in class, yet these children are brilliant and have great potential,” the Minister said.

She urged parents to protect their daughters from early pregnancies and marriages that ruin their futures. Hon. Kaboyo cautioned parents against withdrawing their children from school to cultivate crops.

Eng. Brian Buhanda, the General Manager at NEC, thanked the Government for entrusting the corporation with the construction of infrastructure projects and urged parents, teachers and learners to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities.

Mr Peter Waibi and Mr Emphraim Walubi, the headteachers of Nawansagwa Primary School and Kiwa-Nawabuzi Primary School, respectively, promised to utilise the new facilities to improve academic standards.

They requested the Government to provide additional facilities, such as sanitation infrastructure for learners with disabilities and staff houses.
