National Athletics Team accorded warm welcome

Asmara, 23 September 2026 – The National Athletics Team, which won gold and bronze medals at the 2026 World Athletics Championship held in Denmark, was accorded a warm welcome by Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, upon arrival at Asmara International Airport yesterday, 22 September.

Congratulating the members of the national team on their achievements in the competition, Ambassador Zemede said that the success was particularly special because it had been achieved by the younger generation.

Ambassador Zemede also called on the athletes to use their success as a stepping stone and prepare for other international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games. He reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to continue providing the necessary support.

Noting that support from the Government and people plays a significant role in motivating them to achieve further victories, the athletes expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Eritrean people in general and the Eritrean communities in Switzerland and Denmark in particular.

In the 5 km road race held in Copenhagen on 19 September, Olympian Dawit Seare and athlete Simon Samuel won gold and bronze medals, respectively, for the Eritrean national team.
