HOIMA
The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has urged Ugandans to develop the practice of sorting garbage at the household or workplace level. She said that sorting garbage at the source eases its disposal.
“The Government plans to support nationwide waste sorting at the source, requiring households, businesses, and institutions to separate their garbage before disposal,” the Prime Minister said during the 3rd National Cleaning Day activities in Hoima City on 26 September 2026. “Sorted waste can be turned into manure to improve garden yields.”
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Jonard Asiimwe; the Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs, Hon. Grace Mary Mugasa; the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abas Byakagaba; and local leaders participated in the cleaning activities in Hoima City. Cleaning activities took place across the country, but the main cleanup site for the 3rd National Cleaning Day was in Hoima City.

“We are in the process of strengthening our legal framework to support waste sorting at the source,” the Rt. Hon. Nabbanja said.
The Prime Minister said the National Cleaning Day programme was improving sanitation, adding that 70% of the disease burden in the country was preventable.
“We can avoid some diseases by keeping our environment clean,” the Rt. Hon. Nabbanja added.

Hon. Asiimwe appealed to Ugandans to take the National Cleaning Day programme seriously as the country prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
“Hoima is one of the cities that will host the tournament,” he said. “We need to keep our environment clean as we prepare to welcome guests from across the world. It is also important to keep our homes and places of work clean.”
Hon. Mugasa commended the Government for introducing the National Cleaning Day programme.
