President Hakainde Hichilema today joined jubilant celebrants in Mongu district to witness the grand arrival of the Litunga from Liyala in the Barotse Floodplain to Mulamba, which lies on higher ground.

The arrival marked the climax of the Kuomboka ceremony.

President Hichilema was on hand to welcome the Litunga, who emerged from the royal barge, the Nalikwanda, at exactly 18:28 hours, completing an almost six-hour journey across the floodplain.

Clad in a bright red traditional siziba attire, President Hichilema later accompanied the Litunga to his new residence, where festivities have continued.

This year’s Kuomboka ceremony drew a diverse crowd, including Diplomats, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senior Government Officials, tourists, traditional leaders, and thousands of Lozi-speaking people who gathered to celebrate the cultural spectacle.

Dating back to the 17th century, the Kuomboka remains one of Zambia’s most treasured traditional ceremonies.

It symbolizes resilience and continuity, while showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
