THE GOVERNMENT OF LESOTHO HAS BEEN COMMENDED BY THE AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION IN RECOGNITION OF ITS LEADERSHIP OF THE SPECIALIZED TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY.
Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation Honourable Nthati Moorosi, was presented with a gift of appreciation by the African Union Commission in recognition of her leadership as Chair of the Specialised Technical Committee on Communication and ICT (STC-CICT) for the past three years.
She received the token during the Sixth Ordinary Session of the Committee currently underway in Libreville, Gabon.
Minister Moorosi delivered the opening remarks at the Ministerial Session. She expressed deep gratitude to the Government and people of Gabon for their warm hospitality and to the African Union Commission for its steadfast support of Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
She described the gathering as a historic moment, noting that technology is no longer merely a tool of progress but a decisive factor in economic sovereignty, global competitiveness and the prosperity of African nations. Under the theme “Africa’s Digital Future, Africa’s Voice,” she stressed that the theme is a call to action for Africa to become the architect of its own technological destiny, guided by African priorities, ingenuity and a shared commitment to inclusive development.
The Minister emphasized that continental ambition must be measured not by the frameworks adopted, but by the real transformation delivered in people’s lives. No community should remain disconnected because of geography, no young innovator should be denied opportunity, and no Member State should be left behind due to limited infrastructure, capacity or resources.
On artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, she said these present a powerful opportunity to accelerate development and integration. At the same time, she warned that progress without inclusion risks deepening inequality, innovation without responsible governance risks undermining public trust, and ambition without effective implementation risks remaining an unfulfilled promise.
She called for a digital transformation agenda founded on affordable connectivity, resilient infrastructure, reliable energy, trusted digital systems, responsible innovation and equitable access. She also urged Africa to speak with one voice in global digital governance and to assert its legitimate interests in shaping the rules of the digital future.
As Lesotho concludes its stewardship of the Committee, Minister Moorosi thanked Member States for their confidence, as well as the outgoing Bureau, the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities and development partners for their cooperation. She expressed confidence that the strength of the institution lies in continuity of purpose, collective ownership and unwavering commitment to implementation.
She concluded by saying the legacy of this generation will not be measured by the technologies witnessed, but by the vision, resolve and collective leadership shown in harnessing them to advance human dignity, unlock national potential and secure a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for the peoples of Africa.
Lesotho will continue to serve actively as Rapporteur in the new Bureau as the chairmanship passes to Ghana. The Government of Lesotho congratulates Hon. Nthati Moorosi on her leadership and remains fully committed to an Africa where technology serves humanity and digital transformation becomes a bridge to shared opportunity.
